For this week you will have a look at the personal essay feedback I gave you. You will make sure you have the following conditions met for your essay.
Checklist:
Highlight five sentences that you will use as a reference for making five photographs.
Have enough visual information in your sentences in order to make the photos.
Font should be 12 point, Garamond or Times New Roman.
Line spacing set to double spaced .
Capitalize all “I”s as “I”s. Example. “I went to the beach”, not “i went to the beach.”
Read each sentence as if you were reading it out loud. If you can read it out loud at home, read it out loud. You will catch things that you don’t by just reading it.
Make sure the piece has a smooth transition between beginning, middle and end.
Make sure you have one clear story to tell, not three different stories.
Make sure the essay is at least 500 words.
Personal Essay: The Rewrite is due on Wednesday, 12/19
Last Year, my goal was to be braver. I have lived up to that goal.
For this next assignment, you will set two goals for yourself and photograph what those two goals look like. In the example above, my goal for last year was to be brave. This photo, with my daughter hiding behind a telephone pole, shows what its like to NOT be brave, to hide behind things, and this year, I have come out more with my own personality and feelings, even if those feelings are complicated or difficult.
Step 1: Write down 3-5 goals you’d like to see yourself do in the new year. This could include:
Better attendance
Do Better in School.
Eat Heathfully.
Get More Sleep.
Get More Exercise.
Meditate.
Learn to Play a Musical Instrument.
Step 2: Choose two goals to sketch out using the graphic tablets or draw it by hand.
Step 3: Use this sketch to plan out lighting, camera angles, etc.
Step 4: Make the two photos.
Step 5: Add text that says what the goals are and that the font and color matches the mood of the photograph.

What I’ll be grading you on:
In focus images.
How well the goal was illustrated.
Font and text matches the mood of the photographs.

What the essay is about: Growing up, finding my own voice, the way in life one thing ends and other thing begins. How there’s a pattern there.
The beginning of the essay: Starts at the end. At the end of the reading series I use to participate in. At Tom and my father talking.
The middle of the essay: I go back and forth between lyrics of the song, Walls by Tom Petty. I go back to how writing and the search for myself was the same thing.
I bring up both Tom Spanbauer, and Tom Petty, and I draw inspiration from both.
At the end of the essay I talk about the two times Tom visited me. At the end, I talk about moving on without my mentors, and how maybe I am a mentor to other people.
